World Building Challenge - Day 16 - Demons

This is part of Faranesque's World Building Challenge from r/WorldBuilding. Check out my hub post for details.

Preface: Most of my posts from this point on will likely focus on the crew of the Rōnni and the refugees with them, now I've done some of the cosmic establishment from Day 1.

In today's installment, remember: as in light, so in dark...

XVI DEMONS

When discussing the Stars and Star-Born, there is something to keep in mind.

Remember: As in light, so in dark.

Recall when the Firmament was made. Pansidera, the Star Which Shattered, became all the Stars in the Firmament, and they in turn created the Worlds and Moons. With their combined Power, they drove the Darkness back, though they could not destroy it completely. It lurks beyond the Veil, endlessly seeking a way through to try to snuff out the Light. And the Stars began to create the Star-Born.

The Power of the Star-Born is immense, though not all Star-Born necessarily learn how to harness it, or even wield it in such a fashion if they do. Much is spoken of their ability to destroy-- in the ages since Menid's Folly is a tale which will never stop being retold, even for ages to come-- but they have just as much capability to create. Have the Star-Born not risen entire cities, entire Worlds, from the very matter and energies of creation?

From beyond the Veil, the Darkness has watched in infinite patience and infinite malice. It has seen the Star-Born and their potential, and it has grown inspired.

Remember: As in light, so in dark.

Star-Born are not common. Some Stars never invest the Power to annoint or create one. And Dark-Born are rarer still.

The Power the Dark-Born wield is vast, more potent in destruction, as the Darkness seeks to render everything back to the swirling maelstrom of matter and energy that was the All-of-All. The Dark-Born are often confused for their counterparts, but they have shown themselves more cunning and subtle than the Star-Born.

It has been said that mortal weapons cannot harm a Star-Born, and this is true. But weapons forged by Dark-Born are another matter. Technology crafted by Dark-Born can affect Star-Born and potentially even the Stars. Such things remain, even after wars and ages, and are sought by canny and scheming sorts. Those Star-Born who realize the existence of Dark-Born have taken pains to create weapons and technology to use against them in kind.

Remember: As in light, so in dark.
